New mammogram advice becomes hot debate in Tampa Bay

After reading the editiorial page of the St. Petersburg Times, it seems as though the debate over new mammogram advice suggested by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force is heating up.

The Task Force recently reported that it is unnecessary for women in their 40s to schedule regular mammograms. It now suggests women age 50+ get a mammogram every other year. According to the St. Petersburg Times, The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists continue to suggest that women in their 40s schedule regular mammograms.

The responses to the article that ran in yesterday’s paper included those of breat cancer survivors. These women suggested that all women pay attention to their breasts and perform regular self exams.

  1. Mammograms for women age 40 is around 1 life saving find for every 1900 mammograms. I agree that this may not be the best number. But women’s #1 health concern is breast cancer. I believe that the emotional side is also important as well. The well being of knowing that your mammogram was normal can also be quite helpful. Self breast exams are not perfect, but at least it is getting women more awareness. Thx

    • I agree, self breast exams are vastly important. I’m not sure of the numbers, but many women find cancer on their own through self exams. Thanks for the reply!
